Agent

Agent overview

Say what you want; the agent plans the steps, calls the tools, and gets it done.

The agent is the core of Neox — describe your goal in natural language, and it plans the steps, calls tools (read/write files, run commands, search, browse the web…), reports as it goes, and keeps working until it's done.

Two modes on desktop

ModeDescription
CodeFor development: sessions organized by project, with model and reasoning choices, approval levels, MCP, and a side panel for code and changes
WorkFor documents, spreadsheets, slides and other office tasks: a simpler interface, with commands running in the OS sandbox and confined to the working directory

Switch modes at the top of the session. Switching to Work moves the session to Work mode's own folder.

Two interaction styles in the CLI

StyleDescription
AgentDefault. Actually does the work: edits files, runs commands, installs dependencies… For "do it for me"
AskAnswers only, no changes. For "look at this / explain this"

Switch with /mode agent or /mode ask.

Where to use it

  • CLI — run neox in the terminal and type your request.
  • Desktop — session list on the left, agent chat in the middle, and a side panel with files, code, terminal, Git and previews.
  • Editor extensions — chat, edit code and run commands from the VS Code or JetBrains side panel.
  • Mobile — view and take over desktop sessions on an Android phone; see Multi-device sync.

What you can control

The table lists CLI commands; in desktop Code mode, use the model and permission menus in the input box.
