Cron / scheduling
Run agent tasks on a crontab schedule, or have it come back automatically after a delay.
Two kinds of scheduling
One-shot delayed wake-up
Lets the agent resume automatically after a set delay while waiting on an external event — a CI pipeline, a deployment, a long-running task.
Example:
{
"delaySeconds": 600,
"reason": "wait for CI to finish before checking results",
"prompt": "check the latest status of the CI build"
}The agent stays interactive while waiting — you can keep talking to it.
Recurring cron tasks
Define daily, weekly, or monthly recurring tasks using standard crontab syntax.
Format:
minute hour day month weekday promptExample:
{
"cron": "0 9 * * 1-5",
"prompt": "list my schedule for today and check GitHub notifications",
"recurring": true,
"durable": true
}Times use your machine's local timezone. Up to 50 tasks at once; tasks unused for 7 days are cleaned up automatically. By default a task lives only in the current session — set durable to true to keep it across restarts.
Tools and commands
Local tools (CLI / desktop)
The agent manages local scheduled tasks with these tools:
| Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|
cron_create | Create a recurring task |
cron_list | List all tasks |
cron_delete | Delete a task |
schedule_wakeup | Schedule a one-shot delayed wake-up |
When tasks run — and when they don't
Scheduled tasks are executed by the Neox client itself, so:
| Situation | Runs? |
|---|---|
| Neox is running | Yes |
| Neox is closed | No |
| The machine is asleep | No |
| Several runs were missed while closed | Runs once on reopen — missed runs are not replayed individually |
Recurring tasks marked durable are written to disk and restored automatically when Neox restarts; unmarked ones live only in that session.
Common patterns
- Auto-generate your schedule every weekday morning —
cron_create("0 9 * * 1-5") - Continue after a deployment or check completes — the agent runs the command, then calls
schedule_wakeup(delaySeconds=300)to check the result 5 minutes later - Periodically pull updates or data — define the cadence with a crontab expression
