Code index
Build a symbol index of your codebase to speed up agent search and navigation.
What it does
With an index built, the agent can jump straight to functions, classes, interfaces and methods by name instead of scanning full text — noticeably faster on large projects.
Supported languages: TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, Go, Rust.
Building the index
CLI — type /index to open the menu:
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Status | File count, symbol count, size and last update |
| Build index | Incremental build; unchanged files are skipped |
| Rebuild index | Full rebuild, ignoring the cache |
| Clear index | Delete all index data |
| Configure | Choose which languages to index |
Shortcuts: /index build, /index status.
Desktop — manage it under Settings → Agent → Code index (turn on "Show advanced settings" at the bottom of the settings sidebar first).
You can also just ask the agent to "index this project"; it calls the indexing tools itself.
Where it's stored
The index lives in the project's .neox/index/ directory; add it to .gitignore. Deleting the directory clears the index.
Notes
- Incremental builds only re-index changed files.
- Directories such as
node_modules,.git,dist,build,targetandvendorare skipped by default. - Files larger than 5MB are not indexed.
