Installation
The desktop app runs on macOS and Windows. The CLI installs via npm on Apple Silicon Macs, Windows x64 and Linux x64; a standalone binary is published for Apple Silicon Macs only.
Neox ships in two forms — a command line tool and a desktop app. They share one account system.
Installing the CLI
| Platform | npm | Standalone binary |
|---|---|---|
| macOS · Apple Silicon | ✓ | ✓ |
| Windows · x64 | ✓ | — |
| Linux · x64 | ✓ | — |
| macOS · Intel | — | — |
| Windows · ARM64 | — | — |
| Linux · ARM64 | — | — |
On Intel Macs and Windows ARM64 you can use the desktop app; there is no build for Linux ARM64 yet.
With npm
npm install -g @mk-co/neox-cliRequires Node.js 20+.
Standalone binary (macOS Apple Silicon only)
curl -fsSL https://neox-dev.com/install.sh | shThe script reads the release manifest to detect your platform and installs neox to ~/.neox/bin/neox. Platforms with no build are refused outright — it will never download a file that does not exist.
Install somewhere else with NEOX_INSTALL_DIR:
NEOX_INSTALL_DIR=/usr/local/bin curl -fsSL https://neox-dev.com/install.sh | shWindows
There is no standalone CLI binary for Windows yet; install it with npm as shown above. The .exe on the download page is the desktop app.
Upgrading and uninstalling
neox update checks for and installs updates; with npm you can also reinstall the latest with npm install -g @mk-co/neox-cli.
To uninstall, run neox uninstall, or npm uninstall -g @mk-co/neox-cli for an npm install. Delete ~/.neox as well to remove your account and config.
The desktop app
A graphical app: the agent timeline, plus files, code editing, a terminal and Git in the side panel, alongside previews for web pages, spreadsheets, Word, PowerPoint and PDF and a built-in browser. It updates itself.
| Platform | Artifact | Status |
|---|---|---|
| macOS · Apple Silicon | DMG | Released |
| macOS · Intel | DMG | Released |
| Windows · x64 | EXE; portable build also available | Released |
| Windows · ARM64 | EXE | Released |
| Linux | — | Not available (the CLI works on x64) |
Get the latest build from the download page. On mobile there is an Android app (remote control for a desktop session); iOS is not released yet.
If macOS blocks the first launch ("cannot verify the developer"), open System Settings → Privacy & Security and click "Open Anyway".How the CLI and desktop app relate
- Same account. Sign in on each one separately; once both are on the same account they share your subscription and quota.
- Separate sessions. Each stores its own sessions locally; opening the same session on both ends is not supported yet.
- Same agent. Skills, MCP and rule files work in both; capabilities that need a UI — spreadsheet and Word editing, side-panel previews — are desktop-only.
CI and containers
# install into an image (Linux has no standalone binary; use npm, Node.js 20+)
npm install -g @mk-co/neox-cli
# non-interactive login (keep the password out of your shell history)
NEOX_LOGIN_PASSWORD="$PASSWORD" neox login --email=robot@example.com --password
# one-shot request
neox -p "Review this diff" < changes.patch
# skip the update check so it never blocks a build
export NEOX_DISABLE_AUTO_UPDATE_CHECK=1Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
neox: command not found | ~/.neox/bin is not on your PATH. Add export PATH="$HOME/.neox/bin:$PATH" to your shell config. |
| npm says the platform isn't supported | Check the platform table above: there is no CLI for Intel Macs, Windows ARM64 or Linux ARM64. |
| No output when piping | Pass -p to explicitly use print mode. |
| Still running the old version after upgrading | Run which neox — if there are several copies, delete the stale ones. |
